YIP 2010.005 - Going Home, originally uploaded by smohundro.

It was the first day back into the office since before Christmas (we got to work from home last week). On Thursday, I get to come in earlier than usual (before 6!), so I have that to look forward to.

Those romance-novel-authors and their indian-love [Jan. 5th, 2010|10:33 pm]

I've written about Cassie Edwards and her "Savage Indian" series, and today, am directing you to the blog maintained by the Santa Ysabel Tribal Library.  These books are not meant for young adults. I discuss them as an example of the sort of imagery that permeates society.

So---click on over to "Book using Kumeyaay Words and the Lucas Name." I gather that the novel is supposed to be about the Kumeyaay, but, the author offers up the usual stereotypes...

A quick one before bed.

It may come as a surprise to some, though doubtful to many, that I've fallen in love with Lady Gaga.
The reasons for this love is for another post.

However, it comes as no surprise that I love Nirvana, after all, anyone who appreciates music history has to love them a little bit.

Just half an hour ago I was emailed the best mash-up in existence.
Why didn't I know about this before!

Enjoy:

Good night.

Amtrak [Jan. 5th, 2010|03:05 pm]

Happy New Year everyone!

I am considering my first train ride (out of Tucson, anyway) to Texas, with my 11 year old. Anyone have any experience with taking the Amtrak on a similar type of trip out of Tucson? I noticed the schedule is kind of, um, inconvenient, but other than that, do you have any comments, negative, positive, tips?

Thanks :-)

Rude pundit... [Jan. 5th, 2010|01:16 pm]

jlassen

The idea that some released Gitmo detainees might actually be pissed off at the United States, no matter how radical they were before their imprisonment without charge, has provoked huffy, self-righteous outrage from conservative commentators and politicians....

We are incapable of dealing with the notion that whether you're the good guy or the bad guy is a matter of perception. And that sometimes the United States is the bad guy. Unless we're willing to confront that and do something about it (like, at minimum, apologize and offer compensation), then we shouldn't be surprised that Yemeni Mel Gibsons will seek to go all Lethal Weapon on us.

Solutions to Mexico's Drug Crisis - WSJ.com [Jan. 5th, 2010|01:14 pm]

crasch

Growing numbers of Mexican and U.S. officials say—at least privately—that the biggest step in hurting the business operations of Mexican cartels would be simply to legalize their main product: marijuana. Long the world's most popular illegal drug, marijuana accounts for more than half the revenues of Mexican cartels.

"Economically, there is no argument or solution other than legalization, at least of marijuana," said the top Mexican official matter-of-factly. The official said such a move would likely shift marijuana production entirely to places like California, where the drug can be grown more efficiently and closer to consumers. "Mexico's objective should be to make the U.S. self-sufficient in marijuana," he added with a grin.

Magic Flute Fine Art Nudes: Conversation with an American Cop (NSFW) [Jan. 5th, 2010|01:02 pm]

SH: “What do you mean, ‘shock and awe’?”

Bob: “I’ll call for reinforcements. An additional one, two, three or even four squad cars will all descend on the guy, and as many or more cops will surround him all telling him to identify himself and tell us why he’s taking the photos. If we intimidate him, he may tell. If he becomes angry and objects violently, we can arrest him for disorderly conduct and get his ID that way. If he stays cool and does not give us grounds to arrest him, then there’s little to do, but we’ve made our point. Do you think he’ll photograph a high-value target again?

Infuriating.

@#$%! Upper Canadians [Jan. 5th, 2010|03:45 pm]

james_nicoll
What I discovered today is that if you drive to Guelph from Kitchener on what starts off as Victoria, you will encounter two cross roads with either the same or similar names, one near the Kitchener end and one near the Guelph end. We wanted the second one. This sort of thing happens because people in Upper Canada have never and still do not appreciate how useful it is to use unique road names.

In somewhat related news, Guelph has a surprising number of graveyards. It's related because when we were trying to figure out if we missed our road, the map said we'd pass a graveyard, a river and a golf course, and we did. It was the wrong graveyard, river and golf course, obviously. Later, I kept spotting still more graveyards.

for the first time ever, i have a new year's resolution.
i'm going to climb a mountain by the end of the year.
that is all.
.
unrelated to any such frivolity- i've decided to just go and build myself the appropriate storage furniture for my dvds and something more appropriate for our living space than the monstrous expedit we have from ikea (which is less than half filled with 12"s at this point due to the great cullings of the past few years.)
in sound news- sunn0)))'s 'monoliths & dimensions' scored tops spots in both the brainwashed poll and the wire's rewind list- honestly, i think it's well deserved.
while i'd be hard pressed (as ever) to come up with any single (or ten, probably) *best* releases of the year, i can say that that is the metal related album that i returned to most often this year and every listen showed me something new.
also! new controlled bleeding box set must be mine!
also!also! i've decided to actually start a band(ish) sort of unit and am looking toward some eventual live work during this next year (the last year of the first decade of the twenty-first century for all you math failures.)
tentatively going by the name keziah mason, think early tangerine dream meets a lot of :zoviet*france: by way of lovecraft with the occasional free jazz freak out.
i'm strangely excited about this year.

AlphaSmart vs. Netbook (Or: Should I Dust Off My Old Tech?) [Jan. 5th, 2010|10:30 am]

ktempest
[Tags|, , , , , ]

While I was looking for a picture of my version of the AlphaSmart for yesterday’s post I came across a post touting the superiority of the Neo (that’s what they’re calling AlphaSmarts these days) over netbooks. To say I was shocked is an understatement. In these times when netbooks flow from the heavens like water, why in the world would anyone still use an AlphaSmart? I was doubly surprised to discover that this guy is an SF writer (he went to Viable Paradice). Thinking on it, I’ve probably met him. But that’s neither here nor there, my main shock remains: AlphaSmart over netbook? No wai!

He even has the same netbook I do, a Samsung NC10. Yet he still feels that the portability and usability of an AlphaSmart is far, far better. He also cites battery longevity. Though I’ll agree that years of battery life is better than a few hours, ever since I got my NC10 I haven’t felt chained to an outlet. (It’s the 7+ hours of battery life, I love it, so.) And while it is great to have a machine that allows you to concentrate on just one thing, writing, the device is just a little too unitasking for me.

One of the reasons I stopped using my AlphaSmart is that it was crap for editing. Sure, it would allow you to get some words down on the screen and drive forward. However, you certainly can’t edit really well on that thing, or go back through what you’ve written and try to take stock in a meaningful way. And only seeing 4 lines of text at a time felt like far too little. You can’t edit already-existing text. And if you’ve typed a major chunk of your novel on the thing, good luck trying to get a sense of the structure.

Not that Marko claimed the Neo could do any of these things. These were just my reasons for giving the machine up. I needed a gadget that would allow me to do all of my writing tasks, from the first draft through to the editing stage, that was easy to carry, light, and had a reasonably-sized screen. Aftre I accomplished that with my Eee PC, my next goal was a netbok with long battery life so I wouldn’t have to worry about outlets. And here were are.

Having read through his whole review, though, do you think that the Neo has enough advantages over a netbook to justify putting the latter aside?

Today in move busting [Jan. 5th, 2010|08:57 am]

[Current Music |Bust a Move by Young MC]

Okay, so your best friend Harry has a brother, Larry, and in five days from now he's going to marry. Sure. And he's hoping you can make it there if you can, 'cause in the ceremony you'll be the best man.

Wait. It sounds like you're actually Harry's friend. Why is Larry making you his best man? Are you actually closer to Larry (the groom) than Harry (his brother, and your best friend) is? To qualify that numerically, doesn't that mean your friendship with Harry comes in at an eight or nine, which I'm assuming is reciprocal. But then, your friendship with Larry will be lower on your part, perhaps a six or seven, but his with you is eight or nine. Isn't that... awkward? I can only imagine odd social dynamics.

I hope that Larry at least makes Harry one of the groomsmen. I mean, having been snubbed in that way a couple times, I know it's annoying.

And is it just me, or does it sound like they told you there's a wedding in five days and asked you to be best man. If, you know, you're not busy. So maybe Larry's first choice for best man had to bail, so you're the backup, instead of calling up one of the groomsmen.

And, seriously, hitting on a bridesmaid at the altar? Classy*.

Music is complicated.

*I said that sarcastically.

Context hides behind the cut. )
