religious nutjobs out of control [Dec. 4th, 2005|10:53 am]
Previous Entry Add to Memories Tell a Friend Next Entry

From [info]triggur's LiveJournal:

I know a young woman who has the misfortune to have contracted genital herpes.

She is on a daily regimen of Valtrex to prevent symptoms from manifesting themselves.

Recently she took her prescription to a Nashville area pharmacist who was apparently a fundamentalist Christian.

Not only did he refuse to fill the prescription, but he tore it up and handed it back to her, saying, "God is punishing you for your sin."

You knew it was going to go beyond birth control pills eventually.

What I'm waiting for is for someone to refuse Viagra.

I'm waiting for someone to refuse antacids. After all, the person should control their diet (bullshit, even when I control my diet, it goes bad, but you get the picture). Until a prescription for a non-politically charged medication is refused filling, nothing's going to happen.

Hey, doctors have moved in on the game, too. In CA some doctors refused to artificially inseminate a single lesbian for "religious reasons." The CA Court of Appeals recently ruled that the woman has enough evidence to take the case to trial.

There are also "pro-life" OB-GYNs who refuse to prescribe BC pills.

Yup. And pharmacists who refuse to fill the prescriptions for contraception. Blargh.

Here's an article I often refer people to: http://www.rcrc.org/news/commentary/do_no_harm.htm

I'm waiting for someone to refuse to dispense AIDS meds. It shouldn't be long now...

I'm sure most of the nutjobs take Viagra themselves. I would expect Viagra to be one of the last things to be refused.

Me too; I was being kind of flippant, because I very much doubt anyone's going to refuse Viagra.

*sighs*

I fail to even be shocked anymore.

I'm speechless. The pharmacy schools should refuse degrees to people like that unless they want to work at a religious pharmacy (like at a Catholic hospital).

Have posted this to [info]dark_christian and to Talk2Action (the latter with a much longer history of this whole "moral refusal" crap).

I will recommend it to [info]triggur. (I don't feel good about spreading things beyond my own LJ if they're not my stuff to spread.)

Triggur has unfortunately removed the link (partly because a *different* group posted the link and a minor flamewar erupted) so, if it's cool with you, linking to yours for now.

I didn't know that about [info]triggur's post. Interesting.

Why can't these Christians open their bible and read John 3:16? It's spelled out pretty clearly that you only need to believe in Jesus to be saved. Rather than denying medication, they should just post John 3:16 there for all to read if saving people is that important to them.

These nutjobs have made Christianity too complicated. Christians don't have to do anything to get saved other than believe that Jesus is their savior. That is IT.

I mean, seriously.
