Oh boy, this is getting even more interesting, now that Harlan Ellison has invoked the Curse of Connie Willis's Chest.

No, that's not Connie

I have no idea what this is all about but 'fishboobfail' has to be the most amusing name I've seen so far out the of the various '_____fail's so far this year.

I suppose I'll be the meanie and say, I don't really see much wrong with that art. 'sa mermaid. Only the ones in Disney films and Comics-Code-Approved funnybooks seem to bother with overmuch in the way of clothes; they are traditionally quite fetching. Perhaps it's all the swimming. Harlan's comment was pretty damn stupid, but hey, it's Harlan Ellison.

Now, if you want to get me hot and bothered, it's when women in fantasy art are portrayed in a just-plain STUPID manner. I.e., the 'warrior women' who are wearing a chainmail G-string and not a scar on them, and D+-cup tits at that. Sorceresses whose spells apparently require being buck-naked and running about in a porn-trace pose.

Contrast, say, this piece of art from the Exalted RPG; the character is essentially the setting's Julius Caesar; the statue is of the former empress. (The superpower nation of the setting has been ruled by a woman for 700 years. The same woman.) The woman is a perfectly believable warrior; attractive, but one imagines when she's not posing in rose gardens she might wear a proper helmet to keep it that way.

I love the "I can't be racist because I discovered Octavia Butler!" bit the most, I think.
